ཁེ་ཎ་ཌའི་གྲོས་ཚོགས་ནང་བྱམས་བརྩེའི་ལོ་དང་བསྟུན་བོད་ཀྱི་ཉིན་མོ་སྲུང་བརྩི་ཞུས་འདུག Canadian Parliament marks Tibet Day on the Hill as part of Year of Compassion celebrations. Washington D.C., RFA Tibetan—Canadian parliamentarians, members of the Tibetan community, and Tibet supporters gathered at Canada’s Parliament on June 2 to observe Tibet Day 2026, an annual event aimed at raising awareness about Tibet and promoting support for Tibetan culture, religion, and human rights. Sherab Tharchin, executive director of the Canada Tibet Committee, said the event is organized annually by the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet and this year brought together lawmakers from multiple political parties, Tibetan community representatives, and North America Representative Namgyal Choedup. Speaking at the gathering, Namgyal Choedup thanked Canadian lawmakers, officials, and the Canadian public for their longstanding support of the Tibetan people. He said support for Tibet reflects a commitment to truth, human rights, peace, and ethical values, adding that cooperation with Tibetans on these issues benefits both Canada and the broader international community. This year’s observance also coincides with celebrations marking the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which Tibetans in exile are commemorating throughout the year as the “Year of Compassion.” Namgyal Choedup told attendees that Tibetan democracy is “not merely for appearance’s sake” but is closely linked to the Tibetan freedom movement. He added that Tibetans inside Tibet will ultimately decide their own political future and described democracy as one of the exile community’s most significant achievements. Several Canadian lawmakers also expressed concern about the preservation of the Tibetan language, culture, and religion, while emphasizing the importance of peaceful dialogue and continued international attention to Tibet.
