The protest was started on this date by former members of the Tibetan Youth Congress who gathered to condemn Beijing’s "Ethnic Unity and Progress" legislation, which entered into force on July 1. Activists argue that the law is a tool for forced cultural assimilation designed to systematically erase the fundamental Tibetan identity, language, and cultural heritage. The Tibetan Youth Congress told Tibet Radio today that this demonstration is only the beginning of a broader global campaign. The organization revealed plans to start an indefinite hunger strike in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York City—the location where Lobga Rangzen self-immolated and passed away earlier this month while calling for global action and Tibetan freedom.
