Tibetan activists Chain Themselves to U.N. , Demand Action on Tibet &Justice for Lobga Rangzen
NEW YORK — Members of Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) staged a direct action outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday, chaining themselves to the main entrance gates to demand justice for late Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen and urge the United Nations to take meaningful action on the human rights situation in Tibet. The protest followed Lobga Rangzen's self-immolation near the U.N. headquarters last week, which activists described as a desperate call for international attention to China's policies in Tibet. Chanting slogans calling for justice, accountability, and an end to what they described as the ongoing genocide in Tibet, the demonstrators appealed directly to U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk to break their silence and address the Tibetan issue. They were later arrested by police.
