On the evening of Thursday, July 2, 2026, 52-year-old independence activist Lobsang Palden, widely known as Lobga Rangzen, passed away after setting himself on fire in front of the United Nations Headquarters. The tragic incident marks the first documented Tibetan self-immolation in United States history. Rangzen, the President of the Tibetan National Congress NYNJ, had been actively protesting China's newly implemented 'Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress Law' just a day prior.
