While Uttarakhand became the first state in the country on January 27, 2025, to implement the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act 2024, with the objective of ensuring equal rights for women across all sections of society, the state government simultaneously discontinued religion-based personal civil laws.
In doing so, it also addressed practices considered detrimental to women's dignity i.e child marriage, polygamy, triple talaq, halala, iddat etc.
