While a heavy police presence was deployed around the campus to prevent street protests, political banners, or public marches, the event was not shut down. In addition to the birthday celebrations, attendees used the gathering to offer prayers and final respects for Lobga Rangzen, a Tibetan activist who recently died after self-immolating in front of the UN Headquarters in New York City.
