For nearly seven decades, Tibetans in exile have endured immense hardship while rebuilding their lives far from their homeland. From the early years of exile — marked by harsh labor under the scorching plains and road construction work in the Himalayan regions of India — to becoming active contributors to India’s social and economic landscape, the Tibetan diaspora reflects a remarkable journey of resilience, adaptation, and transformation. Among these stories is that of Ama Tsamchoe la and her family, residents of Chakur Shichak in Bylakuppe, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. Representing a unique generational shift, Ama Tsamchoe la is among the very few elders actively engaged as a full-time content creator alongside her family. In this interview, she reflects on the transformation of her life from the traditional experiences of exile to navigating the modern world of digital content creation. She also shares memories of earlier generations, including traditional courtship practices, community life, and the evolving social fabric of Tibetans in exile. This interview forms part of a larger documentation project that seeks to preserve and present the lived experiences of Tibetans in the diaspora — highlighting how communities have adapted, persevered, and transformed across generations.
