DHARAMSHALA, July 21: Chinese pro-democracy activist and former 1989 Tiananmen student leader Zhang Yi has been criminally detained by state security authorities in Lhasa after allegedly showing a photograph of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his mobile phone to a Tibetan devotee at Sera Monastery, according to the Weiquanwang Information Center.
The incident occurred on July 1, 2026, the same day China’s “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress” came into force, raising concerns among Zhang’s family and rights advocates that the veteran activist may have been targeted under the new legal framework.
