Chinese pro-democracy activist Zhang Yi was arrested in Lhasa on July 1, 2026, allegedly after showing a photo of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to a Tibetan devotee at Sera Monastery. Zhang Yi and his younger brother, Zhang Xuan, were taken to Chengguan Police Station around 5:30 p.m. Zhang Xuan was later released after giving a statement, while officers said Zhang Yi would be detained for 15 days without issuing documents. On July 18, authorities told Zhang Xuan that Zhang Yi had been charged with “incitement.” His exact location and specific charges remain unclear.
