Geshe Lharampa Nyima Wangchuk left Tibet at the age of 19 to fulfill his father’s dream of studying Tibetan Buddhism and serving the larger community. At the same time, his parents did not want him to go to India because of the long distance and uncertainty. However, with a heavy heart, he escaped Tibet, knowing that if he remained there, he would not have the freedom to study Tibetan Buddhism or serve his community, as the Chinese government had been placing immense pressure and restrictions on Tibetan religious and cultural life. As a result, he was forced to choose between staying with his parents and seeking freedom. He chose freedom. Because of that difficult decision, he was never able to meet his parents again, as they passed away while he was living in exile. Today, he has completed the Geshe Lharampa degree, one of the highest academic degrees in Tibetan Buddhism, and currently serves as a professor at the Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education. Like him, there are many Tibetans who have not been able to see or reunite with their parents after escaping to India.
